Cotton & Linen Kurta Care Guide for Kashmir Summers
Cotton and linen kurtas are summer staples in Kashmir — but they wrinkle, shrink, and yellow faster than most people realise if washed incorrectly.
Wash Cold, Not Hot
Hot water shrinks both cotton and linen fibres over repeated washes, and it can also set in sweat stains rather than lift them. Cold or lukewarm water preserves the fit and softness of your kurta far longer, especially through a full Kashmir summer of frequent wear.
Embroidered & Printed Kurtas Need Extra Care
Aari, Tilla, and block-print kurtas can bleed colour or lose thread detail in a washing machine, particularly on the first few washes. Hand wash or professional laundry is significantly safer for anything with embroidery or hand-block printing, where machine agitation can loosen threads or blur dye.
Dry in Shade, Not Direct Sun
Direct, prolonged sunlight fades coloured cotton and linen faster than most people expect, especially on darker or printed fabric. Drying in shade or indirect light keeps colour vibrant through the season while still air-drying effectively in Srinagar’s dry summer air.
Iron While Slightly Damp
Linen creases easily and holds those creases stubbornly once fully dry. Ironing it slightly damp — or using a steam setting — removes wrinkles far more effectively than ironing bone-dry fabric, and puts less stress on the fibres over time.
Storing Kurtas Between Wears
Hang cotton and linen kurtas rather than folding them tightly for extended periods, as sharp folds can turn into permanent creases in humid weather. Make sure they’re completely dry before hanging in a closed wardrobe to avoid the musty smell common in Kashmir’s humid months.
