Mehendi season is beautiful — until the dye ends up on your favourite kurta or dupatta. Mehendi stains are notoriously stubborn because the dye binds with fabric fibres, not just sitting on top like most stains. Here’s what actually works.

Why Mehendi Stains Are So Hard to Remove

Fresh mehendi paste often contains oil to deepen the stain on skin, which transfers to clothing and makes the mark even more persistent. The longer it sits, the deeper it sets — timing matters more here than with almost any other stain.

If the Stain Is Still Fresh (Within a Few Hours)

• Gently scrape off excess dried paste with a blunt edge — don’t rub, it pushes dye deeper
• Dab (don’t rub) the area with a clean, damp cloth to lift loose pigment
• Avoid hot water at this stage — heat can set the stain permanently
• Avoid toothpaste or baking soda on delicate or coloured fabrics — they can lighten the fabric’s own colour

If the Stain Has Already Dried or Set

Once mehendi oil and dye have set into delicate fabric — silk, georgette, function-wear — home remedies often do more harm than good. This is where professional treatment becomes necessary. A trained dry cleaner identifies the fabric type and uses the right solvent-based pre-treatment without risking colour bleed.

Different Fabrics Need Different Approaches

Cotton kurtas can handle slightly more aggressive home treatment, but silk sarees, chiffon dupattas, and embroidered function wear need gentler handling. Rubbing or strong stain removers on these can damage embellishments — often worse than the original stain.
