Sozni & Tilla Embroidery Care Guide
Two of Kashmir’s most prized embroidery techniques – and two very different sets of cleaning risks.
Sozni and Tilla are often mentioned together, but they’re structurally different kinds of embroidery, and that difference matters when it comes to cleaning. Sozni is fine needle embroidery worked directly into the base fabric with silk thread – delicate, dense, and flat. Tilla is metallic-thread work, traditionally real gold or silver wire, couched onto the surface of the fabric rather than woven through it. One risk is thread damage; the other is metal tarnish and surface abrasion.
Why These Two Techniques Need Different Handling
Sozni’s silk thread can fray, pull, or lose its sheen under harsh detergent or vigorous washing – the danger is to the thread itself. Tilla’s metallic thread reacts differently: moisture and oxidation can tarnish the metal, and any agitation or folding along the embroidered line can crack or flatten the raised threadwork. A cleaning process built for one can actively damage the other.
Machine washing (pulls silk threads and cracks metallic wire), steam ironing directly on embroidery (flattens raised threadwork permanently), folding along embroidered lines repeatedly (creates stress fractures in Tilla wire), and storing in humid conditions (tarnishes metallic thread and can stain surrounding fabric).

Store flat or loosely rolled rather than tightly folded along embroidered lines. Wrap in breathable cotton, never plastic – trapped moisture is the single biggest cause of Tilla tarnish. Keep away from direct sunlight, which fades silk Sozni thread over time.
